HISP-S 331 The Hispanic World I (3 credits)
Prerequisites: S310 or S311 or equivalent

S331 is an introduction to Hispanic culture through the medium of
Latin American literature. Our primary objective will be learning
to "get the most" from a literary text by reading it not simply for
plot and content but as an aesthetic or artistic creation. Through
examples of the short story, poetry, drama, and the novel we will
explore the various literary genres and their characteristics,
become aware of a text's structure and functions, and analyze the
special nature of literary language. The texts chosen will also
call for discussion of the Latin American writer's relationship to
his/her historical and cultural tradition. There will be occasional
films, music, class debates and presentations, etc.

The class will be taught in Spanish. The aims of the course include
improving students’ reading, writing, and oral expression in
Spanish; widening their cultural horizons; and making them more
subtle readers of literature. There will be a midterm and a final
exam, four compositions, and many short, ungraded written
assignments.
