Above section open to undergraduates only

This course will provide a broad overview of Ottoman history, from
the origins of the empire at the beginning of the 14th century to
its ultimate demise after the First World War.  Students will follow
the fortunes of the Ottoman state as it first rose to regional
prominence, transformed itself into a world power, and in later
centuries, entered into an unequal encounter with European power and
wealth.  The course will also look into broader trends in social,
economic, and cultural history in the vast lands under Ottoman
dominion.  Receiving most attention will be the African and Asian
portions of the empire, where the Ottoman legacy has been critical
to the formation of the modern Middle East.
