Honors | Reading the Prophets
H303 | 26191 | Herbert Marks
Focusing on the Hebrew Bible, but looking as well at ancient Greek
literature and some modern poems in English, this course will take
up the paradoxical relationship between voice and text, the oral and
the written, in prophetic writing. Issues to be discussed include
the relation of prophet to audience, the revisionary use of
traditional motifs, inspiration and the role of the redactor, and
the relation of prophetic word to apocalyptic vision. Emphasis
throughout will be on the creative role of reinterpretation in the
genesis of the biblical corpus.
All readings in English.
Recommended preparation: E103, R210, L367, or other critical study
of the Bible.
