INTERNATIONAL STUDIES TOPICS: GLOBAL POVERTY: This course will
address the causes of poverty around the globe, examining various
theoretical perspectives and policy recommendations.  The class will
examine the roots of poverty, focusing on the developing world, and
steps that national governments and international organizations are
taking to alleviate world suffering.  This course is unique in that
it is offered in conjunction with a course at the University of
Umeaa in Sweden via interactive compressed video.  Students will
participate in a two-week Global Poverty Conference simulation
during the class.  The Swedish instructor, Dr. Cynthia Kite, is a
political scientist and the course is part of a Peace and Justice
Program in Sweden.  Please note that this course will be offered
during the Second Eight-Week Session of the Fall 2004 Semester on a
daily basis.
