The course will focus on American presidential elections using the
2004 election as our primary example. We will focus on a variety of
issues that are central to presidential elections including the
presidential primary system, campaign financing, electoral strategy,
media advertising, the national nominating convention, and the
general election. We will examine the evolution of the nominating
process and recent trends in presidential voting behavior.
The class format will include lectures with substantial time allotted
to discussion, films and video clips. Requirements for the course
include taking two exams and doing a research project.
