In recent years conservative views have dominated discussion of
social welfare policy. The elimination of “dependence” in anti-
poverty policy, the use of market mechanisms in health care, and the
privatization of social security have all been touted as nostrums. I
am highly skeptical of these notions and would like to subject them
to careful analysis in a working seminar wherein we examine the
writings of prominent conservative spokesmen. We’ll begin with the
more popular treatments of politicians like Gingrich, move to more
professional analyses like those of Larry Mead, and then consult the
writings of the economists whose views of a property-owning citizenry
in a market society lie behind much of the current debate. To work
well the seminar will need folks of varied political perspectives.
