IFRI stands for the International Forestry Resources and Institutions
(IFRI)Research Program, which is an IU-coordinated network of 13
collaborating research centers (CRCs) in 11 countries that study the
relationship between rural communities and the forest resources they
use. The course consists of three components: (a) seminar sessions;
(b) fieldwork, and (c) computer laboratory sessions. Seminar sessions
introduce participants to IFRI's theoretical foundations, the
instruments and methods used in data collection, principles of
research design, basic data analysis, and report-writing. Fieldwork
in a southern Indiana forest community provides hands-on training in
field methods. The computer laboratory component covers data entry
and database management and is primarily for visiting scholars. This
year's class, which will be co-taught by Elinor Ostrom, Krister
Andersson and Arun Agrawal (University of Michigan), will pay
particular attention to the challenge of developing solid research
designs for research projects that rely on a low number of case
studies.
