Is marriage a failing institution? Is the United States really the
land of equal opportunity? How does globalization affect the United
States and other countries and people around the world? How are our
own lives shaped by broader social structures and institutions?
There are so many topic areas that sociologists research and
examine: the family, inequality, race, gender, education,
globalization, deviance….the list goes on and on. The best part of
sociology is that sociologists can study any aspect of social life.
In this course, we will examine the concepts, theories, and methods
used by sociologists to examine the aforementioned questions and
many other “why” questions. My goal is that each student learns to
use their “sociological imagination” to look at the world in a new
way-- applying sociological concepts, theories, and methods to their
own lives, our society, and the world in which we live.
