Course Description
Introduction to Design and Production provides a conceptual
framework for writing, developing, and evaluating a variety of media
products. This is not a hands-on production course. You will however
be introduced to many of the fundamental techniques involved in the
production process. These include: storyboarding, treatment writing,
pitching, production design, visualization, composition, and editing
strategies.
This course concentrates on visual storytelling strategies and
production techniques. We will examine how stories are communicated
in a variety of media formats including film, television, computer
games, and multimedia on both CD-ROM and the World Wide Web.
Course Objectives
Understand and appreciate the importance of a good story in a media
production
Develop a basic understanding of the media production process, and a
vocabulary for story development and production
Differentiate media; understand why different media are designed
differently
Recognize key media techniques; understand why and how they enhance
the message
Learn the steps involved in media production, from concept through
proposal
Understand the synergy of elements in a media production and
recognize how they impact the story
Explore the possibilities of convergence between digital and
broadcast media
