T314 Telecommunications Processes and Effects

Course Description:  This course examines the effects of mass media
on human cognitions, attitudes, and behaviors, at the individual,
group, organizational and societal levels, with emphasis on the
impact of new technologies.  To understand the processes by which
mass media influence human cognition at the individual and aggregate
levels, a variety of empirical social science research will be
explored.  The history and evolution of mass media theory and
research will also be covered.  This class accommodates
approximately 76 students and is taught in a combination of lecture
and seminar format.  There is no separate discussion section, so
students are expected to participate during class time. This course
is part of the curriculum “Media and Society” emphasis area of the
major.  The prerequisite for the course is T205, or consent of the
instructor.  There is one required textbook for this course.
Additional readings will also be posted on the library’s electronic
reserve. Class meets TR 1:00 -2:15.
