T347 | 11216 | Meyer, P.
Semester: Fall 2004
Course Code: T347
Class Number: 11216
Instructor's Name: Phil Meyer
Name of the Course: Promotion & Marketing in Telecommunications
Course Description:
This course will give the student an understanding and appreciation
for marketing in telecommunications, including television, radio and
the Internet. The class will touch on traditional marketing concepts
(terms such as branding, reach, frequency, consumer research), but
an MBA will not be necessary.
Since marketing is an evolving discipline, emphasis will be placed
on current strategies and techniques employed throughout all media,
with a concentration on television. Marketing is also a
collaborative process, so class participation and a cooperative
project will be part of your grade.
Course Objectives:
* To understand the purpose of marketing in electronic media;
* To conceive, execute and evaluate marketing strategies and tactics;
* To acquire knowledge of disciplines within marketing departments;
* To increase awareness of marketing efforts of the media.
Attendance and Participation:
Attendance is vital to your success in the class. Attendance will be
taken, beginning with the second class. After two absences, one
percentage point will be deducted from the participation portion of
your grade for each subsequent unexcused absence.
The instructor must approve an excused absence, preferably in
advance. The absence will convert to an unexcused absence, unless a
written review of the content covered in class is turned in by one
week after the absence.
Missing class in order to leave early for a holiday or break will
not be an excused absence.
The Attendance/Participation part of your grade can be affected in a
positive or negative way by your participation in class and in your
group project.
Grades:
Attendance/Participation 10%
Super Bowl Ad Critique 10%
Mid-Term Exam 20%

Extra Credit (up to a 10% maximum) can be earned by participating in
a promotional activity with a written summary turned in the last
class before Exam Week. The activity should be related to some sort
of electronic media, and can be related to a one-time promotion or
continuing activity. Students can volunteer for fund drive or
special event opportunities at WTIU or other local campaigns. Some
opportunities will be announced via Oncourse, but the ultimate
responsibility for scheduling and completing the project belongs to
the student. The amount of the extra credit depends on the quality
of the written summary and amount of effort required to complete the
activity.
