Anthropology | Bioanthropology
B200 | 13400 | Cook

B200 is an introductory course in bioanthropology. It is required for
the undergraduate major in anthropology, and it is a prerequisite for
many advanced courses in bioanthropology. B200 carries N & M credit
toward the COAS distribution requirements. You will NOT be able to
count this course toward the S & H requirement.

We recommend B301, a three credit lab course that also carries N & M
credit, concurrent with or following B200 for anyone who plans a
career in anthropology.

In B200 we will survey the field of bioanthropology, emphasizing the
ways in which ideas about human evolution are tested using evidence
from the fossil record, from living monkeys and apes, and from
contemporary human groups. Grades are based on three objective exams,
each contributing 20%, five take-home essays, each counting 5%, and on
three lab exercises, each counting 5% toward the final grade. Exams
and essay questions will be based on assignments from your textbook,
and on short, article-length readings. Your readings are available
through E-RESERVE. Look at ON-CCOURSE for a link to E-RESERVE,
reading assignments and other supplemental information about B200.

Please try to do readings before the Wednesday lecture each week, as I
will discuss issues from the readings in class. Our objective is to
build skills in reading articles in science. Essays are based on the
assigned readings. YOU MUST DO FIVE ESSAYS FOR FULL CREDIT. YOU MAY DO
MORE AND COUNT YOUR TOP FIVE.

Labs will emphasize hands-on experience with fossils, casts, bones,
measurements, and observations of physical features. YOU MUST ATTEND
THREE OF FOUR SCHEDULED LABS AND TURN IN A WRITTEN EXERCISE FOR FULL
CREDIT. You may attend all four, and your grasp of the course material
will be better if you do so. THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP LABS. You will
need to schedule about one hour in the lab to complete the assignment,
but feel free to work with the materials for a longer period if you
wish. Labs are held in SB060, FRIDAYS, 2:30 to 4:00 pm. YOUR FINAL
EXAM is on the day listed in the bulletin and you must plan your
travel around the exam schedule. Please contact me before any exam you
must miss. If you miss an exam without contacting me beforehand, I
will require a written, substantial excuse. Travel plans are NOT an
excuse for missing exams. Exams are multiple choice, and include map
questions and other visual materials. The exams are NOT cumulative,
and all three are similar in length and structure. Make-up exams are
short-answer in format.
