The focus of this course is the structure of Arikara, a Northern
Caddoan language spoken in North Dakota. Arikara is a classic
polysynthetic, fusional American Indian language in which most
grammatical elements are marked in the verb. Those elements undergo
numerous phonological changes in word formation that frequently mask
their underlying identity. Coarse goals are to survey Arikara
phonology and grammar and to achieve basic reading and conversational
skills. Course materials include a textbook, an accompanying set of
multimedia lessons on DVD, and class handouts.
