C501 introduces major twentieth-century ideas about the nature of
literature and the principles and methods of its study, including
contemporary theories that have challenged traditional approaches
and inspired new ones. We will consider critical theories falling
into three broad and overlapping categories: writing, reading and
the text; literature, history and society; and identity and
subjectivity. We will use Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Manuel Puig’s Kiss
of the Spider Woman and Balac’s Sarrasine as exemplary primary
works.
Theoretical texts will include the writings by Louis Althusser,
Roland Barthes, Pierre Bourdieu, Judith Butler, Michel de Certeau,
Roger Chartier, Jacques Derrida, Terry Eagleton, Michel Foucault,
Steven Greenblatt, Fredric Jameson, Georgy Lukacs, Pierre Macherey,
Edward Said.
There will be 3 short essays of 5-6 pages and a final 15-page
paper.
