This graduate survey course examines novels from Meiji to early
Showa, particularly focusing on the issues of modernity, narrative,
and the notion of a "modern self." We will read "canonical" novels
as well as bestselling works that have played a central role in the
cultural imaginary of the period. In addition, we will examine
critical texts that help position the novels and issues of
modernity.
