This course will investigate the nature of curriculum in early
childhood education and care in the United States. Enduring
questions of “What should we teach young children?” and “How should
we teach?” will be explored through a critical analysis of research,
curriculum models, and reflection of personal beliefs, values, and
practices. The purpose and characteristics of curriculum models will
be explored through the lens of historical, cultural, sociological,
philosophical, and psychological factors in our diverse society.
This analysis will frame an underlying discussion of how these
multiplicities of influences led to the development of a variety of
curriculum models that have shaped present curricula in early
childhood education.
