12:20p-1:10p MWF (25 students) 3 cr. A&H, IW.
The goal of L205 is to introduce students to the art of poetry. To
that end, in this class you will be invited to learn and practice
strategies for reading and studying poetry that represents a wide
range of historical periods and a variety of literary conventions
and techniques as you strive toward developing a greater
understanding and appreciation of the art. At the same time,
because this section has been designated as "writing intensive," you
will also receive instruction in and opportunities to practice
strategies for writing about poetry.
Our textbook is An Introduction to Poetry, 11th edition,
edited by X.J. Kennedy and Dana Gioia. Students will write four
major papers of 4-5 pages, as well as short weekly responses sent
via Oncourse. There will be a midterm and a final exam.
