Kathy Smith

11:15a-12:30p TR (30 students) 3 cr. A&H.

This course is designed to enable students to read and thereby to
acquire an understanding and appreciation of the poetry of Donne,
Herbert, Vaughan, Crashaw, Jonson, Herrick, and Marvell while at the
same time introducing the historical, cultural, and intellectual
contexts contributing to the creation of their poetry. To that end,
we will identify and practice strategies for reading and writing
about early seventeenth century English poetry in the context of
daily class discussions, informal and formal writing assignments,
and a comprehensive final exam. Attendance is required and daily
participation expected.
