Fine Arts | Survey of Medieval Art
A226 | 22311 | Deliyannis

This course will introduce the buildings, sculpture,
painting, and other art forms of Europe and the Mediterranean in the
Middle Ages (c. 300-1400 A.D.).  There was no one "medieval" art;
during this 1000 years and across its very broad and diverse
geographical sweep, art had many different styles, functions, and
symbolisms. All represent some combination of Roman, Near Eastern,
Germanic, and Celtic elements, adapted for use in a Christian or
Islamic context. We will examine these different forms and styles,
and see how they changed and developed according to the different
needs and tastes of the artists and patrons.

Requirements for the class include several short exercises, a
midterm exam, a paper (3-5 pages), and a final exam.
