Topic: Les transports en commun

People-watching on the bus, eye contact in the métro, adultery in a
stage coach: public transportation has from its very beginnings
transported the imagination of French writers great and small. We
will read plays (Anouilh, Voyageur sans bagages; Tardieu,
Le guichet), poems (by Apollinaire, Cendrars, Mallarmé),
short stories (Maupassant’s “Boule de suif” and “En voyage,”) and
novels (Queneau’s Zazie dans le métro with excerpts from
Flaubert and Proust). We will listen to songs (by Brassens, Perret,
Rivard, LeClerc) and see movies (Zazie dans le métro and
Le dernier métro). Students will be graded on daily
participation, two explications de texte (2 pages each), one short
paper (5 pages), one creative writing assignment, and one oral
presentation in class. Prerequisite is F250: fulfills A & H
