French and Italian | Reading and Expression in French
F300 | 16897 | Ansart, Guillaume
This course is an introduction to reading French literature and is
taught in French. We will read stories (Flaubert's “Un Coeur
simple,” Camus' “L'Hôte”) and short novels (Balzac's Le Colonel
Chabert, Mérimée's Carmen, Gide's La Symphonie
pastorale) exploring various facets of the question of identity.
We will watch film adaptations of Le Colonel Chabert and
La Symphonie pastorale. We will also read short lyric poems
from the period 1850-1950 covering romanticism, symbolism and
surrealism, by poets such as Hugo, Nerval, Baudelaire, Mallarmé,
Laforgue, Valéry, Apollinaire and Eluard. Students will write a take-
home paper (two versions), an in-class essay, and take a final exam.
Prerequisite is F250: fulfills A & H requirement.
