The purpose of this course is to provide students with an overview of
the history of the German language from its Indo-European origins to
the present day, while also examining selected areas in a bit more
depth. The fall 2005 version of the course will place special emphasis
on the structure of the Middle High German (roughly 1050-1350) and
include a number of reading selections from Middle High German texts.
The course assumes reading knowledge of (Modern) German, but no
specific background in linguistics.
The course grade will be based on the following criteria:


two short written assignments	20%
two 30-minute quizzes		20%

class participation and exposé	20%
course paper			40%
