Gender Studies | Themes in the Study of Gender: Gay Histories/ Queer Cultures
G205 | 26902 | Johnson

Examines the social, cultural and political history of same-sex
desire in the United States and abroad. A particular emphasis will
be placed on the historical emergence of certain readily-
recognizable American sexual subcultures such as the modern lesbian
and gay "movement" or "community." But we will also pay close
attention to the ways that social and cultural formations like race,
class, gender and nationality interrupt and embellish any linear
narrative of lesbian and gay history as such. May be repeated with
a different topic for a maximum of 6 credit hours.
