HISP-S 407 Survey of Spanish Literature I  (3 credits)  LITERATURE
Prerequisite:  S331 and S332 or equivalent

A panorama of literary masterpieces from the medieval and Golden Age
periods (XVI and XVII centuries) in the Iberian peninsula. The
reading list will include some or all of: POEMA DE MIO CID, LA
CELESTINA, selections from the ROMANCERO and from the poetry of
Garcilaso, Fray Luis, Lope, Góngora, Quevedo, and Sor Juana Inés de
la Cruz; a sampling of mystical writings; the novella LAZARILLO DE
TORMES, and a complete plays by Calderón.

The intent of the course is to familiarize the students both with
the great authors of early literature in Spain, and with approaches
to the study of literature.

Grades will be based on examinations (midterm and final), three
short papers to be written in Spanish, and class participation
(mostly in the form of one-paragraph papers due after every class
meeting). The course will be taught in Spanish.
