This course will examine the history of Latino immigration from
Caribbean and Mexico since the late-19th century. We will explore
the varied political and economic contexts that gave rise to the
circular flow of people, labor, culture and ideas. What has inspired
generations of Latinos and Latinas to migrate to the United States?
How have Latino communities shaped and been changed by the “American”
economy and body politic? How have music, culture, folklore, and the
media changed the way Americans view Latinos and Latinas? These and
many other questions will be the focus of class lectures, multimedia
presentations, guest lectures and texts.
