This course offers a history of Indian-white relations. It will begin
just before the contact or colonial period and continue to the mid-
nineteenth century. The course will focus on the cultural, social,
biological and ideological adjustments that both Europeans and tribal
peoples were forced to make. Europeans and Americans sought to
exploit the land for wealth and status and hence the Indian had to be
removed or his behavior drastically changed. The Indian resisted
these attempts through war, religious movements or retreat.
Readings for the course will be from several thematic works that
illustrate American Indian cultures and works that shaped American
attitudes toward America's tribal peoples.
Grades for the course will be based on: attendance, discussion, a
midterm and a final.
