A portion of the above section reserved for majors

This course will explore some of the major themes and recent
scholarship in Romanian history. Some of the topics include ethno-
nationalism, history of the Orthodox Church, the Iron Guard movement,
the Holocaust, gender roles and reproductive policies under
communism, as well as the post-communist transition. Our readings
will be multidisciplinary in approach, with the aim of reading some
of the most sophisticated analyses published on these themes. The
aim of the course is to both familiarize students with these topics
and the literature connected to them, and also to prepare them for
research in the history of Romania, not only within the national
boundaries, but also in a broader regional comparative framework. As
a prerequisite for the course, students are asked to have read Keith
Hitichins, "Rumania, 1866-1947" (Clarendon, 1994).

Students will be asked to prepare brief reports on the readings for
discussion in class and to write two historiographic essays based on
the bibliography included in the syllabus. I will also accommodate
research and reading interests that fall outside of the syllabus as I
construct it before the course. Therefore, students signing up for
this course are encouraged to contact me ahead of time, so I can be
apprised of their thematic interests.
