In this course students will learn about the major sources and
methods of investigating twentieth-century Russian history, with an
emphasis on issues of imperialism and nationalism.  The course is
designed to prepare graduate students to produce an original research
paper in the history of Russia and/or its empire in the twentieth-
century, particularly the first half of the century and the immediate
postwar period.  Specific topics of discussion and research will vary
according to the interests of the enrolled students.  Reading
knowledge of either Russian or another relevant research language is
a prerequisite for this course.
