For history majors: a seminar focusing on medical aspects of modern
war, broadly understood. Our group readings will focus on issues that
engage healers and humanitarians: the experiences of prisoners of
war, physical wounds and the repair of bodily injuries, the
psychological and psychiatric aspects of soldiers’ experiences, the
interests of physicians and surgeons in their participation in
warfare, and the creation and involvement of international
humanitarian organizations, such as the International Red Cross. Each
student will also select a particular topic for a research paper,
within one of the broad general categories in our class readings, but
those papers need to relate to the military conflicts and problems
since the invention of guns. Evaluation based on contribution to
seminar discussion, participation in and contributions to sub-groups
focused on particular themes within the general readings, and the
final seminar paper.
