This course deals with seven issues in the history of Jamaica,
selected because they illuminate the present-day position of this
Caribbean nation and problems faced by many developing countries.
The issues are these:
1. Colonization, sugar, and slavery
2. Jamaica begins its social development: education, health care,
the middle class and other signs of development in the 19th century
3. The Jamaica paradox: high life expectancy but low income
4. Why were/are the people poor?
5. World Bank plans for development, and the Jamaican assessment
6. Outlets for frustration, including Reggae, Rastafarianism, and
Ganja
7. A democracy or a “predatory state”?
This class satisfies the intensive writing requirement. Lectures,
class discussion, interesting reading material, and some music and
film on Jamaica. Grades will be based on seven papers, class
discussion, and reports.
