This special topics course brings together work on cultural theory,
feminism, and music analysis to explore connections between music,
gender, and sexuality. The course will be organized around
particular topics (rather than by chronology) and in relation to
specific musical works and readings and different types of music
from classical to popular.  We will consider the ways in which
gender and sexuality are implicated in various musical practices and
in the analyses that seek to characterize those practices.

Selected topics:
•framing gender studies: musicology and music theory
•theorizing difference—race, class, nationality, sexuality, gender,
power and desire
•feminist perspectives in music criticism, queer theory, gay and
lesbian musicology
•musical discourse, metaphor and narrative
•music and the body; dance, movement, and performance
•multiple positions and revisionist strategies; the role of the
listener & listening practices,
•personal voice, identity; the portrayal of women (film, opera,
musical theater, popular music)

Readings:  Selections will also be geared to the interests of those
participating and may include texts by authors such as: Abbate,
Adorno, Attali, Barkin, Boretz, Brett, Burns, Citron, Cook, Cox,
Cusick, Drinker, Frith, Guck, Hisama, Kielian-Gilbert, Koskoff,
Kramer, Maus, McClary, Nattiez, Reich, Sayrs, Shepherd, Sloboda,
Solie, Subotnik, Straus, Tick, Treitler, Wood.  The instructor has
particular interests in the music of 19th- and 20th/21st-century

Course requirements:  readings, class discussion, short reaction
papers or reports on issues arising in the readings, one major paper
and class presentation.  Prerequisite: MUS- T351 or consent of
