Honors | Rhythm & Meter: Performance Issues (MUS)
N399 | 21603 | Gretchen Horlacher

TuTh 9:30-10:45am

This seminar will consider various ways in which we might describe
rhythmic phenomena in music (i.e, organizations of duration, meter,
and tempo.) As we study various analytical approaches, we will focus
on how their applications illuminate ways in which we perform
music. For the most part, we will study tonal music, although we
will examine the challenges later music presents as well. We will
also explore the literature on the perception and cognition of
time. Students will be expected to complete the readings,
participate in a lively class discussion, write short papers based
upon the readings, present a reading to the class, and to write one
final seminar paper.
