Organisms & Experiments: Topics in the Hist & Phil of Life Sci
This interdisciplinary seminar aims to familiarize students with
current topics in the history and philosophy of the life sciences.
One focal point of our discussions will be biological
experimentation. Topics will include experimental systems and
investigative techniques, modeling, visualization, and the roles of
model organisms; as well as experimentation in historical context:
the case of Mendel. Another focal point will be the evolution of
biological research areas in the late 19th century. We will study
the spontaneous generation debate and the development of cytology,
and we will encounter biological theories as historical entities in
the transmission and translation of Darwinian theories. There will
be ample opportunity for students to develop research projects in
these or related areas.
