WAS FORMERLY TITLED VARIATIONS IN HUMAN SEXUALITY I
OPEN TO UNDERGRADUATES ONLY
This course is an introduction to sexual diversity in contemporary
American society. We will look at the results of recent surveys of
sexual practices and discuss a variety of ideological perspectives on
sex. We will examine gender differences in sexual socialization, and
how these differences complicate communication between men and women
about sex. We will explore the issue of sexual violence, with a
special focus on understanding sexual assault on college campuses.
Through reading, interviews, and a panel, we will examine the
diversity of experiences of those who claim heterosexual, gay,
lesbian, bisexual, and transgender identities. In the final section
of the course, we will explore other forms of sexual and gender
variation. We will learn about non-monogamous sexual lifestyles,
transsexuality, and BDSM.
