Meets 2nd eight weeks only

All peoples dance—in different forms and combinations and for
different purposes. We will explore western and non-western dance,
classical and popular, historic and contemporary asking the
fundamental question Why dance? We will begin with the body since
dance only exists in performance. Then we will examine how dance is
learned and transmitted, what values it has for performers and
audiences, what being an interpreter and performing artist means.
Wednesday evenings will be reserved for films, performances, and
special guests, all bringing an important dimension to our exploration
of dance. Requirements will include attendance at dance events,
rehearsals or classes, written reflections, a course project and a
final take-home essay. Readings and active class participation are
also part of the course.
