C360 Latin Literature in Translation: The Empire and After – This
course will proceed more or less chronologically from Imperial Rome
through the decay of the Western Empire and the early days of
Medieval Europe. Texts will include prose and poetry across a
variety of genres: epigram, satire, the novel, biography &
autobiography, dialogue, history, and letters, from authors
including Martial, Juvenal, Suetonius, Apuleius, Perpetua,
Augustine, Jerome, Boethius, and Gregory of Tours. Some familiarity
with “Golden-Age” Roman authors (Vergil, Livy) would be helpful, but
it’s not absolutely necessary.
