L409 Readings in Medieval Latin This course will survey the poetry
and prose written in Latin from Jerome (c. 400) to the Carmina
Burana (c. 1230). Readings will include excerpts from the Vulgate
Bible, biographies, miracle tales, love poems, letters, histories,
riddles, visions, and satires. We will discuss the ever-changing
literary culture of the Middle Ages, and examine how Latin was used,
changed, and occasionally abused, by virtue of its being the
universal language of the Medieval West, but a language that was
without native speakers from an early date.
