This course asks one central question: how does the family affect
the ways Asian and Pacific Islanders experience diaspora? We will
be looking at different Asian and Pacific migrant communities in the
United States to answer this question. What does it mean to be a
family when family members are scattered around the globe? How do
the ways in which people gossip, raise children and give gifts
affect the ways that Asian and Pacific families maintain
themselves? In this course, we answer these questions by looking at
Indian, Korean, Japanese, Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Tongan and
Samoan families.
