Social movements develop in order to address a variety of issues
including, but not limited to, identity politics, the effects of
globalization, and group autonomy. At the heart of these issues is
a sense of loss: loss of recognition, loss of resources, and loss of
power. In this course, we will survey social movement literature to
uncover various forms of social movement rhetoric. Additionally, we
will examine reactions to several movements, as well as the
appropriateness of and possible venues for memorializing social
movements.
