This seminar examines texts, industries, communities, and cultural
practices that are engaged in defining and categorizing television
genres. Drawing from recent scholarship on film genre theory as
well as studies on situation comedies, talk shows, and reality
television (among others types of programs), we will analyze the
inter-textual meanings of television genres for particular
interpretative communities. Throughout the course we will
interrogate the popularity of certain genres in specific historical
and cultural contexts and their interconnection to larger socio-
economic processes, relations of power, and cultural practices.
While most of the course readings will focus on the US, we will also
explore TV industries and genres in Western Europe and Latin America.
