Cognitive Science Q450

How Language Works

This course looks at what makes human language unique: how grammars
permit productivity; how the same situation is construed differently
by different languages; how languages are structured at the separate
levels of phonology and morphosyntax; the fact that languages are
learned; the relation of language to "theory of mind". Students
will use software designed to explore the learnability and
efficiency of simple artificial languages and will then look in some
detail at a range of natural languages. Coursework will include a
project in which some property of language is simulated
computationally.

Prerequisite: Q320 or equivalent.
