L700/Q700 Representation of words in memory
Overview of issues regarding how words are represented in cognition.
We will read papers presenting the viewpoint of linguistics, that
is, phonological theory, linguistic variation and construction
grammar, plus papers on psychological studies of categorization
phenomena in vision and audition, recognition memory for words,
neural network models of speech perception, and mathematical models
of memory. The goal is a clearer picture of how words and language
could be represented in cognition that is compatible with as much
experimental data as possible. Students will present papers in class
and write a term paper addressing some aspect of these issues.
