A narrative of the Pacific War from the Marco Polo Bridge "incident"
to the Japanese surrender.
Topics will include Pearl Harbor as history, island hopping and the
geography of the Pacific region, military strategies, charismatic
leaders, propaganda and mutual images, the home fronts, the morality
of wartime behavior, the idea of war crimes trials, the meanings of
victory and defeat.
Extensive use of documentary films as well as contemporary written
sources. Midterm and final project.
