Topic: « Reflets du temps » An introduction to French literature
that focuses how works of prose, poetry and theater reflect the
historical events, everyday life, and philosophical ideas of their
time. The reading list includes poems by Villon, Ronsard, Nerval,
Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Apollinaire, Prévert and Ponge (texts provided
on the course website); Madame de Lafayette’s novella La
Princesse de Clèves, Alain-Fournier’s novel Le Grand
Meaulnes, and Ionesco’s play La Cantatrice chauve. Final
grade is based on: presence and active participation in class (15%),
oral presentation (20%), two 4-page papers (20% each), mid-term
examination (25%). The course will be conducted entirely in French.
Prerequisite is F250 or consent of instructor. F300 fulfills A & H
requirement.
