G 362 Deutsche Landeskunde/Contemporary Germany (3 cr.)
Fall 2006

Course description:

Prerequisite: G300 with a minimum grade of C-. Recommended: G330.

This course offers an introduction to contemporary German culture. We
will talk about the history of the two German states after 1945 as
well as examine different perspectives on political, social, and
cultural issues in present-day Germany (for example, education,
East-West conflicts, the politics of memory, minorities, European
integration). We will develop our cultural knowledge on these matters
through readings as well as through a variety of German films. The
more or less regular film showing in the evening is therefore a
mandatory part of this course. Assignments include academic papers and
a creative task, most likely a contribution to a class website.
