Topic: Visions of Community
4:00 - 5:15, MW

The history of literature is not a given: periods are outlined to
order texts chronologically, and the stylistic and thematic criteria
defining “Romanticism,” “Classicism,” and “Modernism” create
inclusions and exclusions. This course will therefore ask how literary
history is produced and whom the selected canon serves. It will
introduce you to the major periods of the history of German literature
since Romanticism and serve as an introduction to the basic poetics of
different genres.

We will read texts that show how major German authors from Heinrich
von Kleist to Christa Wolf have invented and shaped human
relationships during the last two centuries. Since Antiquity
communities have defined and reflected themselves in biologic and
seemingly natural relationships: the family served as the narrative
core of these visions of community. The state figured as father for
its sons, the citizens. Yet other forms like friendship and orphanage
sever these relations and break the logic of the common. Discussing
the way in which familial bonds, sisterhood, brotherhood, friendship,
and love are figured means to read how literature reflects the fact
that man is a political being. Every literary text therefore implies a
reflection on what it means to live with others. Although reading is
traditionally perceived as a solitary act, literature is a linguistic
production and therefore itself inherently political.

The final grade will be based on preparation (25%; readings, written
assignments and attendance), three short papers (45%), and a midterm
and a final exam (30%).
