HISP-S 450 DON QUIJOTE (3 credits) LITERATURE
Prerequisites: S331 and S332 or equivalent.
This course explores the many and complex fictional worlds of Miguel
de Cervantes’s DON QUIJOTE, the two-part novel which is widely
considered to be one of the greatest pieces of fiction ever written.
Through a complete reading of Parts I and II, we will investigate
the interplay between this important masterpiece and its socio-
historical contexts in Golden Age Spain and Renaissance Europe,
questions of human existence, literary tradition, metafiction and
self-consciousness in art, representations by artists including
Goya, Dalí, and Picasso, the immeasurable influence of DON QUIJOTE
on a plethora of novelists and filmmakers, as well as the critical
reception of the text. The course will be conducted in Spanish.
