A world listened to is as different from a world which is read, as a
world watched is different from a world played. How we choose to
communicate changes everyone and everything. The first person who
made a mark on a cave wall was probably viewed in magical awe. The
printing press brought the power of the Holy Roman Empire to an end.
Radio and television have elected presidents and dethroned tyrants.
The internet probably impeached the last president of the 20th
century. God only knows what the game will do as we continue through
the 21st century. The goal of this class is to look as far backwards
as possible at the effects of media to see how far forward we can
imagine new changes by our new media, primarily the internet and
games.

This class will be divided between readings, viewing and doings
regarding social change wrought by the new media of its time
[looking backwards] and actively using new media of today to plan
for future change which is personally meaningful [imagining
forward]: designing social change campaigns for games and the
internet.
