MWF 2:30-3:20pm The prerequisites for this course are two years of algebra and an interest in tackling exciting real-life problems, such as calculation of chances (probabilities) from a mathematical point of view. The course introduces some of the most interesting and applicable aspects of discrete mathematics. Topics include counting methods, discrete probability and Markov chains, matrices and game theory. Interesting problems such as labeling problems, walk in Manhattan, birthday problems, voting patterns, optimization problems, gambler’s ruin, and two-player game theory will be discussed. There will be regular quizzes, homework assignments, class exams and a comprehensive final exam. In addition, extra credit problems will be given from time to time. These problems are intellectually very stimulating.
