Syntax in Perspective--A step toward Ultra-minimalism

The goal of this graduate seminar is two-fold:

First, we explore the ways to make empirical bases of syntactic
theories more reliable. We will attempt to purify grammaticality
judgments and generalizations by paying close attention to what has
been largely neglected in the development of generative grammar--
examination of the influence of extra-syntactic and extra-
grammatical factors in empirical observations.

Second, extending the formal analyses proposed for the achievement
of the goal mentioned above, we will pursue possible ways to
eliminate certain non-minimal aspects of the minimalist program.

Topics include:

*Formal syntax and its interfaces
--Syntax and prosody, pragmatics and processing
*Experiments in syntax
--Verification and justification of grammaticality judgments
*Physical vs. logical syntax
--Reanalyzing and decomposing overt movement

Class activities will involve critical survey of the literature
combined with the instructor's presentation of his original research
and open discussion.

A term paper (and possibly one or two class presentation(s)) will be
required.

Prerequisite: At least two graduate-level courses in syntax (or the
instructor's consent).
